The Black Radical Tradition; Synergies and Implications for Health Equity

Dr. Whitney Pirtle

This talk will discuss Dr. Pirtle's ongoing theoretical work that utilizes Black Radical Tradition (BRT) to explain racial inequities in health. This talk will explore the historical and contemporary iterations of Black Radical Tradition, which, informed by the work of Cedric Robinson and others, can be defined as a collective of radical thinkers and actors engaged in Black struggle. She conceptualizes BRT as an organizing framework, and argues Critical Race Theory, Racial Capitalism, and Black Feminist Sociology can independently and collectively contribute to health equity today, especially in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Whitney N. L. Pirtle is a sociologist with broad, interdisciplinary expertise in critical race theory, social inequality, health disparities and health equity, Black feminist sociology and praxis, and mixed methodologies. Throughout her research and writing, as well as teaching and service to the field and her communities, she centers equity, inclusion, and justice.
